Most people have heard about the potential benefits of CBD and as CBD has become more well-known, new ways of consuming it have become more popular. One of these methods includes drinking CBD, an easy and convenient way to get the benefits of this naturally occurring compound.

But despite the potential health advantages of CBD, some people think it may cause paranoia. Is there any truth to these claims? The answer is yes, but only for a relatively small number of people.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss whether CBD drinks make you paranoid.

What are CBD’s benefits?

Other benefits of CBD include reducing inflammation, bad moods, seizures, a lack of appetite, nausea, muscle spasms, migraines, blood pressure, tremors, acne and skin irritation. But does it matter whether you take CBD or THC? What’s the difference between these compounds? 

Cannabis 101: CBD vs THC

THC and CBD are both cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. There are over 60 known cannabinoids, but the most well-studied ones are THC and CBD. These closely related compound groups have similar chemical structures but work differently.

THC and CBD produce different effects. Each compound contains psychoactive properties, meaning they affect how you feel. But instead of making you high, CBD makes you feel calmer and more relaxed. This is because it interacts with specific receptors in the body called CB1 and CB2. These receptors are located throughout your nervous system and immune systems.

THC also interacts with CB1 receptors in the brain by binding to them. Yet unlike CBD, it causes feelings of euphoria and increased alertness. It interacts with but doesn’t bind to CB1 receptors, meaning it won’t make you “high.”

CBD also appears to interact with another type of receptor called TRPV1. TRPV1 plays a role in modulating pain sensation, inflammation, and temperature regulation.

In short, THC generally gives you the “trippy” effect, and CBD generally makes you feel relaxed. 

What does the research say about CBD and anxiety?

While there isn’t yet sufficient scientific evidence to support the use of CBD as a treatment for anxiety, some experts believe that CBD could help to reduce anxiety symptoms. Anecdotal reports indicate that related products such as CBD drinks can provide relief from anxiety for some users.

This is because CBD has been shown to interact with certain neurotransmitters in the brain that play an essential role in regulating emotions. These neurotransmitters include serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).

Serotonin levels seem to increase when using CBD, which may explain why many users report feeling calmer after taking it.

The answer to this question also depends on whether you suffer from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or panic attacks. GAD causes excessive worry over everyday things such as finances, health, work and relationships.

Panic attacks cause intense fear and discomfort accompanied by physical symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, sweating, dizziness and shortness of breath. In both cases, several types of treatment are available, including medication, psychotherapy and complementary therapies.

Many patients also find that CBD oil offers relief without side effects. A 2020 study looked into the impact of using CBD for treating anxiety and found that CBD could provide a safe alternative to traditional anti-anxiety medications. 

Another study, published in 2016, investigated the effectiveness of CBD for reducing stress and improving sleep quality. It found that CBD could be an adequate remedy. However, it also notes that additional research is needed to draw firm conclusions. 

But while CBD may help to alleviate anxiety symptoms, some think it can make you more anxious and even cause paranoia. Is there any truth to this claim?

CBD drinks make you paranoid?

Paranoia is a common side effect of cannabis use. But what about CBD drinks? Do they cause paranoia? And how do you know whether you’re experiencing paranoia caused by CBD or something else entirely?

Paranoia is one of those things that people don’t talk about much because it sounds like something out of a horror movie. And while there are plenty of legitimate reasons to feel paranoid, some people just seem to be born with a heightened sense of awareness.

CBD can help reduce stress levels, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll make you feel less anxious. Studies show that CBD can increase anxiety in some cases.

So if you’re already stressed out, it’s best to avoid taking CBD products such as CBD drinks unless you know it won’t affect you negatively.

On the other hand, a study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology suggests that CBD might help to treat paranoia. Researchers gave CBD to participants who were prone to THC-induced paranoia. The results indicated that CBD reduced their paranoia-related symptoms significantly.

So whether CBD makes you paranoid or not seems to depend on the individual person and their body. If you’ve been using CBD for a long time without experiencing any adverse reactions, you probably don’t need to worry about it. But suppose you have a genetic predisposition to anxiety and paranoia. In that case, speaking with your doctor before trying CBD products is a good idea. 

Can CBD trigger psychosis?

There is no evidence that CBD causes psychosis. The opposite may even be true. People who experience psychosis often suffer from depression and anxiety, which are increasingly thought to be treated effectively with CBD.

A recent study showed that people who use CBD are less likely to develop psychotic symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. The researchers in the study highlight how those who use CBD tend to have fewer episodes of psychosis than those who don’t take it.

On the other hand, THC has been linked to causing psychosis and psychotic symptoms. Several people have reported having bad trips after consuming large amounts of THC. These experiences can include depersonalization (feeling detached from yourself), derealization (feeling disconnected from reality) and paranoia.

These experiences are rare, however; most people will only experience them once or twice during their lifetime. They also tend to occur when someone consumes too much THC at once. This means that they would rarely happen if someone consumed CBD instead.

If you think you might be at risk for developing psychosis, you should speak with your doctor before starting CBD therapy.

Can CBD undo the anxious side effects of THC?

CBD does seem to help reduce anxiety. It has been reported to work even better than anti-anxiety medications like Xanax. There are several ways CBD could help you deal with anxiety.

While some people may experience increased anxiety when they consume CBD, others report feeling calmer and more relaxed. It all depends on your body and how much CBD you consume.

There are still many unanswered questions about CBD and its effect on anxiety. Still, the evidence suggests that CBD can help reduce the anxious side effects of THC in specific individuals. 

An important variable is your reaction to THC. Some people react badly to the small amount of THC in CBD products.

Specific individuals are more susceptible to paranoia and anxiety, while others can handle THC just fine. This is because our brains process THC differently, and the brains of specific individuals are more sensitive to it than others.

How can I tell if CBD is failing to undo the anxious side effects of THC? Try asking yourself these questions. Do I feel anxious most of the time? Is my anxiety triggered by specific situations or events? Do I feel more anxious when I take THC and CBD together? Do I feel more anxious when I take a higher dose?

At what dose should I take CBD?

The answer to this question depends on many factors, such as age, weight, health status, medical history, current medications, etc. The best way to find out is to experiment with different doses until you find one that works.

Start low and work your way up. If you notice any adverse reactions, stop taking CBD and talk to your doctor about adjusting your dosage.

Taking small doses of cannabidiol (CBD) may help you feel less anxious. A lower dose won’t cause the same psychoactive effects as a high dose.

There may still be some psychoactive compounds in CBD products, potentially leading certain people to experience anxiety and paranoia-related symptoms. When you start with a smaller dose, you can more easily find the right level.

Additionally, suppose you have a genetic predisposition to paranoia and psychosis. In that case, a lower dose will reduce your chances of experiencing a psychotic episode.

Also, taking a smaller dose will allow you to avoid the other unpleasant side effects that are sometimes associated with large quantities. For example, large amounts of CBD can lead to dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, and diarrhoea. These unpleasant side effects are not always noticeable immediately after consuming CBD, but they can become more apparent over time.

There are also reports of users getting addicted to CBD. Although this is very unlikely, a lower dose will reduce the chances of it occurring and allow you to enjoy the potential benefits of CBD.
